If you frequent this site, you are familiar with one of my many obsessions – frosted gold. If you recall Audemars Piguet first released the Royal Oak Frosted Gold in partnership with jeweler Carolina Bucci back in 2016. The first wave of releases featured 37mm and 33mm versions in both white and rose gold. The 37mm examples were powered by the automatic caliber 3120, while the 33mm versions were run by a quartz movement. As a follow up, AP released a limited edition men's version in 41mm, and series of new dial colors for the original models. Now they have taken it s step further, introducing a limited edition 37mm version in yellow gold (for the first time) paired with a mirrored dial. This series is being produced in only 300 examples and will be available exclusively in boutiques.
"When I was considering this new watch, I wanted to create a dynamic contrast of surfaces and settled on the idea of taking the tapisserie dial in the opposite direction towards pure reflection," says Carolina Bucci. "I was drawn to the idea of the appearance of no surface at all, like when you see a calm lake framed by nothing but trees and the sky ... the water almost disappears."
The Frosted Gold Royal Oak came out with mixed reviews – some loved it, some didn't. I was obviously in the former camp and clearly I'm not alone. Audemars Piguet continues to produce different versions of the Royal Oak Frosted Gold, regularly updating the range. This new limited edition brings a little more heat to the mix with a mirrored dial which harkens back to the opulent days of my birth year (take a guess what that is), and I'm a fan. Why not have a mirrored dial on a frosted yellow gold Royal Oak? As this watch is the perfect example of luxury, the price tag matches at $53,600.
